BREAST AUGMENTATION
Breast augmentation is a cosmetic breast enhancement surgery performed to increase the breast size of the patient. Breast implant surgery is performed by placing implants either under the breast tissue or under the chest muscles. Breast augmentation is also used to rebuild the breasts of patients who have undergone breast cancer or other conditions.
Procedure
Breast implants are used most often. Fat grafting is another technique available. The size increase can be as small as one cup size or as large as 10 cup sizes or more. It is important to note that with larger breasts, the whole weight balance of the body changes. This may cause stress to the muscular and skeletal systems.
A surgical implant is either an implant filled with saline solution or an implant filled with silicone gel. Many patients choose this breast implant because if the implant ruptures, the gel stays inside the shell. As a result, the implant is less likely to collapse and will retain its shape much longer than its saline counterpart.
The fat-graft transfer uses grafts of adipose fat tissue from the woman’s own body. The method does not allow for the considerable size increase possible with implants, and slim women may not have enough fat tissue to enable the technique.
General anesthesia is used for augmentation surgery patients. The incision to insert the implant can be in three areas - the areola on the breast, at the bottom of the breast, or in the armpit. After making an incision, the breast implant is inserted into the breast pocket. The implant may be placed below or above the pectoral muscle but behind the breast tissue. After the implants are placed, the incisions will be closed with sutures.
