SCULPSURE®
SculpSure is a light-based therapy for melting fat. It has been available to patients for about five years. Studied extensively, the procedure was approved by the FDA in 2018.
SculpSure is a percutaneous (through the skin) procedure. There are no injections, pain medication, needles, or anything! It has a laser wavelength that penetrates without affecting the skin or nerves. Simply put, it damages the fat at approximately 1.5 cm or little more than ½ inch. In actuality, the fat melts, and like all other forms of fat, the cells are broken up by light energy, namely heat, although they have been broken up by sound energy, radio energy, and cold energy.
During this treatment, the patient's tissues may start getting hot. The SculpSure laser has a cooling phase that cycles almost every 20 to 30 seconds to cool. This cooling feature makes the SculpSure procedure extremely tolerable. If a patient is more sensitive than most, the technician can adjust the intensity of the heat so that it is easy to accept.
Procedure
SculpSure takes about 25 minutes. Multiple areas of the body can be treated in sequence on the same day. On the other hand, the same area is best treated over time. For example, if we were doing the lower abdomen, it could be treated once. Then about six weeks later, you could treat the lower abdomen a second time. If we wanted to treat the upper abdomen simultaneously with the lower abdomen, we could do this the same day. Then come back in 6 weeks for a second SculpSure treatment.
We like to start with patients with between 27% and maybe 35% BMI. Most patients will require no less than two sessions and typically experience a 24% fat reduction. Approximately 93% of patients are satisfied with the SculpSure procedure.
Guidelines - If you can pinch an inch, you can reduce it. Remember that we can expect a fat reduction of about 24% over two treatment sessions. SculpSure can do less fat, but the gold standard would be about 1 inch. Your recovery time is virtually zero. You walk in on your lunch hour, have it done in 25 minutes, and walk out. You can go to the gym immediately after. You can do anything you would typically do. There are absolutely no restrictions whatsoever. There is no need for pain medications, although there is some mild discomfort or topical tenderness for a few days. This varies from patient to patient, with some people hardly noticing any discomfort while others will see a little. There are no other side effects of the machine. One must use caution when diabetic. Certainly, you don't want to do SculpSure when an open wound is nearby.
